Behind The Screens

I've never had a connection to the Arabic language. However, the magic that came out of the brush strokes and the craftsmanship influenced my choice of Arabic calligraphy as a source of inspiration for the project.

I based this app, on Modern Calligraphy Art and I was influenced by a modern Arab artist, Sami Salim.

Modern Calligraphy Art it's the decorative art by writing. In modern calligraphy art, written words use association and sophisticated ways to express emotions. The words don't always have to say their written interpretation. But, in the way the words appear in the craftwork, they send the viewer a message and affect his feelings.

Sami Salim, is a modern Arab artist, from Cairo and lives in Dubai. His works show how Arabic calligraphy takes on a different and modern character, following the influence of contemporary culture.

The Impact Of Adult Role Models For Little Girls

One day I saw my niece, Shira, measuring her mother's wedding shoes. The shoes were huge on her little feet. at that moment, when she walked with them proudly,
I could see the sparks in her eyes. Then I realized the importance of the Idiom:
"Big Shoes to Fill". Making little girls want to get as far as they can, without focusing on the fear of falling. And for that, they need an adult character as an influential role model in their lives, like the way Shira looks at her mom.

Visual Approach

  • “To Be The New Elsa”
There is no doubt that the first movie of "Frozen", made a big impact on little girls. The girls of our time want to be strong and independent. Suddenly everyone wants to be Elsa, because Elsa represents a strong female character and not dependent on anyone, compared to her sister Anna, who is looking for love.
I have based the visual look on the contemporary films of Disney and Pixar, in order to make my film to feel familiar, attractive, and contemporary to the little girls, who already loved Elsa.

  • It was important for me to put in a documentary and connect it to the animation so that the girls could see that it was a real woman behind the story.
  • Connection | The documentary section connects the three dimensional.

    Script & Storyboard

I asked my niece, Shira, what she mostly remembers about the movie "frozen".
She answered me, that at the beginning of the movie, Elsa and Anna are seen as little girls. I immediately went to see again some of Disney movies. Then it was clear to me, in order to create a sense of childhood identification with the main character, I had to start the film with an exposition section that shows the main character as a little girl, and after that, the logo would enter and the movie will start.

I wrote the script several times, but because I felt it was not closed,
I approached screenwriter Shiri Cohen. Shiri took everything I wrote and used it to write a new script. Her script was beautiful but very long and full of characters. With the help of my lecturer, Shimon, we decided that there should be only one female character in the story, the main star. And the supporting characters need to be men, to empower and highlight the main character.
Also, we agreed that the story needs to be simple! so we decided on a simple story template:

Logo -> Declaration of Goal -> Conflict -> The way to achieve the goals + Obstacles-> Success (The Climax) -> Counter Character Response -> Ending. I went back to all the scripts that written, and with basing the story template, I wrote a new script with a new storyboard. To improve the storyboard, I approach consulting a friend of mine, the filmmaker Maor Alteras, and together we thought of more interesting camera angles to help tell the story.

    Design

In the design of the main character (Amelia) and some frames, I tried to be as close as possible to the documentary photos.

    The Animation Process

  • At first, I filmed myself playing each character for the animation to feel smooth. Each section for each character I shot in several different versions. I cut each section and edited into one video that should express the movement of the same character in every section of the film. Then, I used two computers. In one, I played the video of me playing the character, and in the other, I copied and created the animation for the film.
  • Examples | Animation from self photography

  • In some of the talking sections, I used the app called "Face Cap", which help me to photographed myself speaking texts, and conveyed the facial speech movement to the characters through using the plugin "Face Cap X" in Maya.

    Learning

    I started studying 3D alone after I saw a picture of a 3D character,
    which opened my curiosity.

At the beginning of this project, I had a basic knowledge in Maya 3D software. During the project, I learned more software that works with Maya and helped improve and develop the 3D character (as Daz & Substance Painter).
And I deepened my knowledge of Maya software through self-learning
    and lots of tutorials.

    The Next Step

There are two options for the future:

The first option - after making more films in the series, you can produce a doll of each female character, that way the girls can collect the characters and having the doll of the character that they feel most connected to.
The second option - you can take the idea of the series for girls and make a series of films for boys, to try to influence them through key figures like Nicolas Tesla, etc.
